Safe driving is really a matter of attitude. Young men are more likely to pass the UK practical driving test first time than young females but, of course, newly qualified males are statisically more likely to be involved in a serious road accident.

Experience has taught me that people, usually young men, who think they are good drivers (even those who are, in relation to the driving test very good drivers) are the drivers most likely to take risks whilst driving.

That's a healthy attitude on the part of the Brits, and I'm interested to see whether the benefits outweigh the costs of maintaining a system that recycles citizens, often several times. As one who recently decided against moving to the UK (I currently live in the Netherlands, a repressive traffic camera regime), I am relieved not to be sitting for the exam.

Yes the UK driving test is one of the hardest in the world, and is set to get even harder, but you should remember that a 40 minute test like a MOT only gives the results of that particular incident, so passing doesn't mean that you are going to be a safe driver, neither does failing mean you are an unsafe driver.

Passing the driving test, is just the beginning, and it takes years to become a safe and proficient driver.
