I like this idea to a point where it indicates a lane change should occur as a resulted of the pavement producing an alert via sound when in the left lane. However, driving should be a relaxing situation and this noise would add aggravation to an already aggravating situation. For instance, when traffic is so thick that it clogs both lanes, the noise and sound produced will further the aggravation already caused due to the traffic jam.
I think there are better ways to alert drivers to courtesy in the left lane. In fact, I have a novel idea that many like. Please let me know if you do. movealongs.com

LOL - I like this rumble strip.

This strip should not be continuous but intermittant at about every 500 ft. Besides continuous noise annoys the locals.

And the sound the driver hears? "Slow traffic keep right".

vindicated at last! years ago i wondered if roads could be grooved such that they produced a pleasant sound at moderate speeds and a jarring one at high speeds. i'm gratified to know it wasn't such a zany idea...or at least that one other person thought of it, too.

"Pretty groovy."

Groooaaaannnn

Here in Alberta we have the rumble strips on the side on a lot of highways and occasionally on centre lines on two lane roads. I can see how they are quite useful. They are very, very noticeable.

We also have loud rumble strips at major intersections on two lane highways where there is a stop sign. I was once behind a motor home which totally ignored the strips, the flashing red light and the stop sign. Scary indeed.

Although I don't commute and usually only drive in one of Canada's smaller cities I quite enjoy your blog. Your book has been requested via inter library loan.
