McCommons is right. We need frequent, on-time, rapid (interstate highway speed would do) service. I can drive to L.A. from San Francisco at least 5 hours faster than the current trains. Every German city has an office which computes routes, travel time, connections, platforms etc., and issues tickets for all travelers within a few minutes. Let's do things from the ground up instead of making bond brokers rich by mega projects that ignore basic infrastructure fundamentals. All the countries that have built High Speed corridors have had basic rail nets already in place, including intermodal service that we can only dream about.
