Since I was familiar with the older experiments, my attention went straight to the bear in the back. I didn’t notice any other change.

It must be me, but I can’t see the connection.
The issue isn’t being able to tell if a gorilla changes into a suit of armor, but whether a previously empty space is now occupied (or the other way around).
I’d also argue that a fair amount of “change blindness” is necessary for just remaining alive — which would include things like driving a car. If you perceived each and every change to a scene as you swivel your eyes around, your brain would be overwhelmed by things that are almost always unimportant. Indeed, the very concept of “looking around” requires a high degree of “change blindness”, looking for the relevant in a field of the largely irrelevant. So rather than a bug, I’d say this is a pretty essential feature.
So I’d say that instead of playing mind-games in TV commercials, simply tell drivers to watch for cyclists, and educate everyone in the “principle of least surprise” when it comes to using a road.

@mdf If TFL made an advert saying “Drivers look out for cyclists”, or anything else using a road, no-one would take any notice since most people believe they’re already excellent road users and it’s others that need to be more careful.
The adverts draw attention to the fact that “change blindness” exists and, as you rightly say, must exist for us to make sense of our environment, and the novelty of the advert should also draw interest.
Whether it’ll make a difference or not is another matter.
