I have seen this kind of thing before. In DC a lot of times motorists will push cyclists and pedestrians past the boiling point and they will kick the bumper or smack it with a handbag. If you hit it in just the right spot, this will set off the airbag, but you rarely get that kind of thing on video. The last time I saw this was drunk people in Adams Morgan who were mad a cab wouldn't pick them up, and when they kicked the bumper it set off the airbag.

The airbag sensor is a MEMS accelerometer, which is a small integrated circuit with integrated micro mechanical elements. The microscopic mechanical element moves in response to rapid deceleration. The algorithms are considered valuable intellectual property.

"a 1970 study by the Institute of Transportation Engineers Journal looking at San Diego accidents found incidents were twice as likely at “marked crossings” as unmarked crossings." Uh, yeah, and people crossing at marked crossing is likely a lot more frequent than at unmarked crossing, ne pas?

I can't believe that an air bag would be triggered to inflate by a minor knock like that deliverd by the lady's handbag. The whole video has been set up to make some point, although what that is I'm not sure.
