Also Malcolm Gladwell wrote a New Yorker piece (http://www.gladwell.com/2004/2004_01_12_a_suv.html) on how SUVs are less safe than sedans, but because they make the driver feel more safe, the drivers drive them more aggressively. So, due to psychological factors, they're doubly less safe. The excitement of doing 50 mph downhill on a bicycle cannot be compared with anything you might experience on a car, outside of very extreme situations.
