That's exactly why I do continue to live downtown despite my job moving out to the suburbs - reverse commute! Plus I only need the car for getting to work - anything else is the bicycle.

Just to be clear (in case you were referring to me), I did not live in River Oaks. I lived three neighborhoods over the course of six years - Montrose (when I used Houston's lovely public transportation system), Fountainview/Westheimer, and the Hollister/290 area.

If you weren't referring to me, then please disregard.

I too lived in Houston but it was over 30 years ago and traffic was a problem then too. I use to walk to many places but sidewalks abruptly end and drivers would yell out the window "Hey Loser!" (even though I was always wearing a suit). The one and only time I got rear-ended was there. Yes there are alternative roads I used for cycling, but the majority don't live in River Oaks.

The first commenter beat me to it - Kirby is hardly "downtown".

But here's a concept folks - there are more roads in Houston than the freeways. I lived there six years and was proud of the fact that I could get around any traffic snarl just by getting off of the freeway system. Houston is fortunate; unlike cities like Boston (and I've driven there, too,) many of Houston's streets are on a fairly grid-like pattern. Turn off the GPS, learn to orient yourselves, and get off of the freeway!

As a former Houstonian, I can say that the Carrabba's on Kirby is hardly "downtown"
Not only is it not located in actual downtown, it's part of a suburban arterial strip, only a few blocks from a 6 or 8 lane controlled access highway. That neighborhood is relatively dense for Houston, but compared to neighborhoods in Boston, it's really suburban.
I will say that Houston highway driving can be really terrifying-it's like being on the autobahn or a parking lot, without much in between.
