One Response to “Congestion as a ‘Wicked Problem’”

  1. Alvin C. Says:

Reading Bern Grush’s response, I was distracted by a reference he made to something I had never heard of before:
Who can say that we have thought of all solutions to congestion? In any one location we visit, we might be surprised at a local solution. I was recently in Springfield Missouri, and was surprised to learn of the effectiveness of a continuous flow intersection. This system, which I had never seen before, is now projected to reduce gridlock delays by over 70% rather than the original 32% projected.

“Continuous Flow Intersection”? A bit of googling led me to a most enlightening video from Utah DOT about a CFI at Bangerter Hwy & W 3500 S. It allows straight-through traffic in opposite directions as well as left-turners AT THE SAME TIME! I’d never even heard of these designs before. Wow!
